Do I Really Need Weekly Pool Cleaning?
Do I Really Need Weekly Pool Cleaning?
Have you said the words “It’s just my family and I that swims, do we really need weekly pool cleaning?” If you are guilty of saying those words or thinking them, these words are for you. Weekly pool maintenance ensures safe water chemistry, sanitation, and overall appearance of your pool. If you do not treat your pool water, you could grow an algae bloom or become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and serious bacteria like E.Coli. Untreated pools can also cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars in chemical cleanups, acid washes, drain and cleans, equipment repair, liner replacement, and pool resurfacing.
When maintaining your swimming pool yourself, you need to develop a weekly maintenance routine. Here is how we suggest focusing on your routine:
Make sure your pool water level is to the normal operational level, the middle of the skimmer window.
- Test your pool water chemistry with a Taylor Test Kit or bringing it to our store for a free professional water test, followed by instructions on how to balance your pool water.
- Keep a log of your weekly chemical readings to compare to.
- Add the needed chemicals based on your water test results.
- Empty your skimmer baskets
- Empty your pool pump baskets
- Empty your automatic pool cleaner debris bag or clean the cartridge of your robotic cleaner, if it has one.
- Skim pool water surface to remove leaves and debris
- Brush tile or vinyl water surface of the entire pool
- Brush all pool steps, ladders, and benches/buddy seats
- If you have a sand filter, backwash if pressure indicates that it is needed. If DE filter pressure indicates that it needs to be backwashed, do so and then recharge the DE filter with DE powder. If you have a cartridge filter, clean cartridges as needed.
